Hi, I’m Allison! Read my introduction to be taught extra about me and my three mixed-breed canines from Thailand, Jelly, Lorraina, and Manic.
Many people are interested in hazard as a result of it’s thrilling. Amusement parks have made billions by creating rides that make your coronary heart plunge under your massive gut. People are at all times in search of the most recent gory horror movie that can make them by no means wish to sleep with the lights off once more. People scuba dive with sharks, bounce out of planes, and race motorbikes as if making an attempt to interrupt the sound barrier. We do it for the joys, the adrenaline kick, to really feel alive.
What about canines? Are canines interested in hazard on the identical stage as people? My canines definitely are! I want I knew why…
Fear No Predator
Living in Thailand made the Jelly, Lorraina, and Manic conscious of different creatures. And, wow, the creatures they’d encounter! We had the run-of-the-mill chickens, frogs, rats, and floor squirrels. But there have been some animals I actually wished they’d keep away from.
Snakes
Have you ever seen documentaries about orphaned orangutans studying to worry snakes from their human caregivers? If you haven’t, I might test it out as a result of it’s cute. Knowing what’s harmful is a vital talent for them as a result of, with out their moms, they’d not know that snakes equal hazard.
So, why didn’t my canines choose up on this information primarily based on my or my husband’s reactions to snakes? Couldn’t they’ve simply left them alone? Nope! Anytime they discover a snake, chaos ensues. Rat snakes are the most typical ones, and whereas they aren’t venomous, they are going to chew when provoked. Naturally, our canines went after them prefer it was a sport. Thankfully, none of them acquired bitten. I want I might say the identical for the snakes.
But rat snakes weren’t the one serpents they encountered. One day, a 7-foot-long Burmese python got here slithering onto our balcony. Again, it was not a venomous snake, however pythons are recognized for giving life-ending “hugs.” And, in fact, Manic lunged at it. Don’t fear; we grabbed him and locked him in the home till the snake was relocated.
Monitor Lizards
In my humble opinion, monitor lizards are intimidating. They can run as much as 12 miles per hour, which is far quicker than the typical human. Monitor lizards also can climb bushes and swim. These reptiles are geared up with razor-sharp claws and a tail they whip when threatened.
All of those traits imply nothing to my canines. These creatures are youngster’s play to the trio! They go after monitor lizards, even after they get tail-whipped by them.
Miscellaneous
Besides snakes and monitor lizards, the canines have fearlessly pursued scorpions, porcupines, and even a millipede. Okay, so millipedes are usually not harmful, however it was a bit entertaining to see Manic dance across the lone millipede, barking his head off.
Whether they crawl, swim, or have fur or scales, Jelly, Lorraina, and Manic thought of them honest sport. Sigh.
Do They Do It for the Rush?
I’ve beforehand written about my dogs attacking, and sadly killing, small mammals in the USA: squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, and groundhogs. But what was the purpose of going after harmful animals? Are they doing it to guard me and my husband? Do they perceive the hazard that some animals pose to folks?
Perhaps I’m anthropomorphizing my canines an excessive amount of. I do this very often—assuming my canines take into consideration hazard in the identical methods I do.
Maybe they do it for the push? People do dangerous issues on a regular basis for that purpose. Do canines get pleasure from adrenaline like folks do? I believe that typically they do. When my dogs stick their heads out the car window, I wish to suppose they get a rush from feeling the wind blowing via their fur.
This is the kind of “hazard” I can deal with them experiencing. But snakes? Ugh.
